So How are they Made? Every Tiny Detail Matters
Design Inspiration: The creative process begins with inspiration. Whether it's a classic charcuterie spread or a personalized selection of favorite foods, the design of the miniature charcuterie board is carefully planned out to capture the essence of a real-life charcuterie experience. For custom orders, this happens through extensive consultation and inspiration sharing.
The most unique custom earrings I have made to date are these butterfly platters for the owner of The Local Graze in Canton, GA — a gluten free shop who’s logo is a butterfly!
High-quality materials: Each color of polymer clay is chosen and mixed with precision to mimic the hues of different foods and ensure realism, including translucent for the many of the fruits. These are marbled and blended together, and I often use acrylic paint and pastel for applying rinds to the meats and cheeses, and shading the tiny translucent strawberries.
Sculpting, Texture and Detailing: To add realism to the miniature charcuterie board, texture and detailing are key. Tools such as sandpaper, needles, and toothpicks are used to create the appearance of wood grain on the board, texture on the cheese, and subtle details on the meats and fruits. Tiny slices of cheese, bread, apples and cured meats, individually shaped buns and bread sticks, and tiny olives and fruits are meticulously crafted with attention to texture and detail.
Assembly: Once all the individual components are sculpted and textured, they are carefully arranged on the miniature platter using clear liquid polymer clay, which is invisible when baked. Attention is paid to composition and balance, ensuring that each element complements the others to create a visually appealing display.
Baking and Finishing: The assembled charcuterie board is then baked in an oven to cure and harden the clay. After baking, any additional details or finishing touches, such as gloss, are added to enhance the realism and durability of the piece. With these details being so tiny, I often use a magnifying glass!
Final Presentation: The finished miniature charcuterie board is a tiny work of art, ready to be displayed or incorporated into jewelry, ornaments, magnets, and other creative items. Each piece is unique and carries my signature style and attention to detail, making it a charming addition to any collection.
